Dilla Day!
February 24, 2014

February 7th marked the anniversary of the passing of legendary Hip-Hop producer J-Dilla. His life is celebrated internationally on this day throughout the Hip-Hop community. I was asked to design a T-shirt for Dilla day in Hawaii by the Lightsleepers crew. J-Dilla is responsible for so many of my favorite tracks in Hip-Hop, so I was super excited to jump into this tribute piece.

All I needed was some reference and some Dilla beats to dictate the direction and mood.

Once the line started taking form, I simply had to guide it. As a character designer who always has to stay within a said style, there is no greater pleasure then when I get free range to design something in my own style, without restriction of an animation production pipeline.

Once I was happy with the design, I brought the image into Adobe Illustrator, vectorized it and did the color separations for the 3 color silk screen. The color scheme was inspired by those classic Rawkus records T-shirts that I wish I held on to.

Emailed the file to the homies in Hawaii, and VIOLA! the shirts came out super fresh!!!

The shirts where packaged with a “Donuts Are Forever” record tote bag and Free stickers. A portion of the proceeds went to the J-Dilla Foundation to help fight against Lupus. A huge shout out to Truest, sneaker and street wear boutique for holding down the event.

Thank you to all the Dilla fans and to TRUEST for supported the release, I wish I could of been in town for it, but there’s always next year, Mahalos!!!

Bodega returns!
May 20, 2013

It’s been 5 years since Bodega was originally released by Bic Plastics, due to a suffering economy in 2010 the company didn’t see it as a wise investment to produce more. I can’t knock them for it, it’s business, never personal, however as an artist… I had a vision for this figure that was never met. At the end of the day, nobody is going to nurture or invest in your ideas as much as you are. I stacked my chips, took my shit back and brought some art peeps along for the ride! It’s truly an honor to bring one of my toys back to life and share the spot light with Tristan Eaton, TooFly, Pez, and Flying Fortress!  A huge shout out to them for their patience and friendship!

Ok, enough of the intro, let’s hop a flight to NYC for the Bodega relaunch, back where it all started at myplasticheart toy store/gallery! Toofly is one of those inspiring artist I have continuously crossed paths with… as kids in junior high, as art students at SVA, and at gallery shows as exhibitors. I call her a power house because she does it on all levels, business, graff, production, fashion and always seems to operate on all cylinders.

Hannah-Barabarians show
April 9, 2013

Earlier this year I was invited to participate in this pretty cool art show curated by the Studio Miners. I don’t usually do theme shows, but this one was right up my alley. The show focuses on paying tribute to all the cartoons characters we all enjoyed watching as kids. I chose to pay tribute to Dennis the Menace, the cartoon was cool, but the comic was way better! Hank Ketcham is still one of my favorite comic strip artist of all time. My painting is featured as the front of the show flyer, if you’re in NYC, swing by and check out an awesome show, myplasticheart gallery never disappoints!
